Movie Review – Vibrator (2003), Part 2

(Continues from Part 1)

“Vibrator” reaches an interesting impasse at a scene where the two stop to take a bath together in a hot tub. In that crucial scene, Rei realizes that Takatoshi does not fully understand the childhood and other sorts of demons that are pestering her non-stop. He does not understand the voices in her head that frequently brings her to the edge of tears or triggers a throw-up session.

Yet, without fail, he is a kind person. That kindness really gets to her and transforms into a quiet sort of love, a love infused with gratitude, and it happens the way a caterpillar slowly transforms into a butterfly. The truck that they travel in is in fact their cocoon.

In another important scene in the third act, they both confess to one another that they made up a lot of stuff about themselves. Takatoshi has never been married and never had a daughter. Never had a “stalker.” He also probably never got involved with “yakuza” and drug trafficking.

Rei in turn also admits that there is no man waiting for her back home. In their plain loneliness they feel closer than ever to one another; closer than they've ever felt throughout their long round-trip. They did not feel this way even when they took frequent refuge in sex as a possible shortcut to salvation.

At the end of the movie, Takatoshi drops off Rei at exactly the same convenience store in Tokyo where he first picked her up. Gone are the facades, illusions and pretensions. We know these two will not be together. They belong to different worlds.

What remains, however, is the light of truth and a new sense of self-respect. Rei feels the beauty inside her because she has experienced Takatoshi's kindness in full. She received his gentle attention without any ulterior agendas. That ending really makes it worthwhile to sit through this claustrophobic film that mostly takes place inside the front cabin of a yellow Hino.
